The Buddy Pass
A BONUS PROGRAM AVAILABLE TO SEMESTER ABROAD VOLUNTEERS ONLY:
The Buddy Pass is a unique program designed for an immediate adult family member of our Semester Abroad volunteers.
This initiative allows an adult family member to join their loved one in Ecuador for one week of their service, engaging directly in the life-changing work our volunteers are doing in local orphanages. Through the Buddy Pass, the family member will not only witness the impact of the Semester Abroad program firsthand, but also participate in volunteering efforts alongside the dedicated volunteers, creating unforgettable shared experiences.
Eligibility
The "Buddy Pass" is available to an immediate adult family member (parent, grandparent, or aunt/uncle) of current Semester Abroad volunteers. In most cases OSSO would prefer a parent, but exceptions can be considered. Multiple family members (i.e., both parents) may be considered if space allows. Please contact our office at info@orphanagesupport.org with questions about availability.
Duration
Family members will be able to volunteer for one week of their loved ones' semester abroad, participating in the same activities such as working with the children, supporting the tias, and engaging in various education activities. However, the buddy pass may not be used the first two weeks of a semester abroad volunteer’s time in Ecuador so that the volunteer can be adequately trained, etc. during those first weeks of service.
Location
Volunteering will occur in Quito or Cuenca, depending on the Semester Abroad volunteer’s location, allowing them to share in the volunteer experience and witness the profound impact of our work in the communities.
Activities
Family members will engage in all of the activities that the Semester Abroad volunteers do, including volunteering in the orphanages, one cultural excursion, and possible sightseeing during free time in the evenings from 6pm to 8pm.
Expectations
The family member will be required to serve as a short term volunteer serving all the normal shifts their semester abroad volunteer will be working. However, if the buddy-pass parent and their semester abroad volunteer would like flexibility to go out of the compound after each day’s shifts have concluded they will be allowed to do so from the hours of 6pm to 8pm so long as the safety of our volunteers can be assured.
Cost and Incentive
To encourage family members to visit and participate, the "Buddy Pass" program will be priced lower than our standard short-term volunteer program. This reduced cost structure is designed to make it easier for family members to take part in the experience while still covering essential expenses related to their stay, such as accommodations, food, and transportation. By offering a lower price point, we aim to incentivize more family involvement, fostering a stronger connection between OSSO and its volunteer families. The cost is $595 for up to 7 days (not including airfare). This fee will go towards the background check, welcome box (t-shirt, etc.) and up to seven days of room and board in either Cuenca or Quito.
